Pre-Baiting a Leg Snare
A cubbie made of small logs and branches is built to direct the bears to the hidden foot snare. Trap sites were pre-baited in advance by MDC employees to get bears used to the trap sites.
Before data collection each bear is placed on a tarp and blindfolded. Eye gel is used to keep the bears eyes from becoming dry.
Measurements and Data Collection
Fourteen measurements are taken for each black bear.
GPS collars are placed on some of the bears. Each collar is equipped with a GPS receiver, VHF transmitter, and drop-off mechanism. The collars fall off of the bears at a pre-determined date.
After data collection is complete each bear is moved to a safe location where it is monitored until it is able to walk away.
Removing a Black Bear
Bears are tranquilized and carefully removed from each trap or snare.
A vestigial premolar is removed for aging purposes.
One ear tag is placed in each ear for identification purposes.
Each bear is weighed using a spring scale.
MDC and CEL analyze data to meet project objectives, including assessment of demographics, space use, resource selection, and population estimation.
