Our study spans the state of Missouri, but is focused in the Ozark Highlands (green on map) in southern Missouri. Land cover of the Ozark Highlands includes forest (56%), agriculture (37%), grassland-shrubland (3%), developed land (2%), water (<2%), and wetlands (<1%). Agriculture (e.g., cattle, hogs) is more prevalent in the western Ozarks and oak-hickory forest is more prevalent in the eastern Ozarks. Southern Missouri includes public lands such as national forests (cross-hatched areas on map), national park lands, state conservation areas, state parks, and historic sites.
